Style Tips:

Why Tailoring is a Must for Petite Women

Until the fashion industry fully embraces the diversity of petite body types, tailoring remains a crucial tool for achieving the right fit. Even with petite sizing, clothing often requires further adjustments—whether it’s hemming pants, refining a waistline, or fixing sleeve lengths.

Having a skilled tailor isn’t just about altering clothes—it’s about enhancing confidence and ensuring that every piece in your wardrobe feels like it was made just for you.

At Ever Petite, we celebrate these expert tailors and encourage our community to support them. If you’re looking for a tailor who understands the challenges of petite fashion, these businesses are ready to help you look and feel your best!

Common Alterations On Petite Clothing

Whether you’re downsizing a regular size, reviving a thrift store find, or enhancing your existing petite items, these common alterations can make a world of difference!

1. Hemming Pants and Jeans

Hemming Pants

One of the most common struggles for petites is finding pants that don’t pool at the ankles. Whether it’s straight-leg jeans, wide-leg trousers, or dress pants, a simple hem alteration ensures that your pants hit at the right length, creating a streamlined silhouette.

Don’t forget to ask your tailor for an “original hem” so that they maintain the factory-finished look. And if you’re in a rush and couldn’t swing by your tailor, you can use hem tape for a quick and easy DIY solution.

2. Shortening Dress and Skirt Lengths

Shortening Skirts

Ever fall in love with a midi skirt, only to find it practically dragging on the floor? Or a mini skirt that feels more like a knee-length? That’s the petite struggle, and you’re not alone!

Dresses and skirts that fall at an awkward length can make us look shorter. Tailoring the hemline to hit at the most flattering point—typically just above the knee length or at a midi length—enhances proportions.

When altering flowy skirts, request for the tailor to keep the original shape so the fabric drapes well.

3. Adjusting Sleeve Lengths

Adjusting Sleeves

Let’s say you’re going for that chic, polished vibe. But then you put on that blazer, or that super cute button-down, and the sleeves are just… way too long. Instead of looking put-together, you end up looking unkempt—it’s like your clothes are wearing you.

Getting those sleeves tailored to the right length can transform your whole fit. Trust me, it’s a game-changer!

4. Taking in the Waist

Taking Waist In

So, you find these amazing pants, or a gorgeous skirt, and they’re the right length, but then… the waist is HUGE.

Don’t fret, taking in the waistband is the answer! It’ll hug your waist just right and give you a flattering fit without excess fabric bunching up.

5. Raising Shoulder Seams

Raising Shoulders

If your shoulder seams are sitting too low, it throws off your whole look and can make you look smaller than you are. Getting them adjusted helps your clothes fit properly and keeps your proportions looking great.

This works wonders for blouses, structured dresses, and tailored jackets. Just a friendly reminder: adjusting shoulder seams can affect sleeve length, so consider getting both done together.

6. Tapering Wide-Leg Pants

Tapering Pants

Wide-leg pants are super stylish, but petites need to think about proportions. A subtle taper can make your legs look longer and keep things looking chic, not overwhelming.

Remember, keep the taper gentle for a natural flow!

My Take:

Why Tailoring Matters to Me

Essential Role of Tailoring In Petite Fashion My Take

Tailoring has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a petite woman, I know that whenever I buy a pair of jeans—or any type of pants, really—I have to mentally tack on an additional $20 to $25 for hemming. And that’s if I’m lucky. Even when brands claim their pants are “short” or “petite,” I often still find myself at the tailor’s doorstep.

This frustration is one of the driving forces behind Ever Petite. When I started this journey, my goal was simple: to create a space where petite women could easily find brands that truly cater to them, without always needing an alteration to make something wearable. But that doesn’t mean I don’t believe in the power of tailoring—far from it.

There’s something undeniable about the confidence that comes from wearing a perfectly tailored piece. A tailor-made suit, a dress that fits like it was designed just for you—those moments when the fabric falls just right, the proportions are exactly as they should be, and you feel incredible. That’s what great tailoring does.

My hope is that we’ll always need tailors, not because fashion is failing us, but because there is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” body. Everyone has their unique proportions—some of us need a little extra nip at the waist, a higher hemline, or an adjustment to the shoulders. A well-tailored wardrobe is a game changer, and if you have the chance to invest in it, you absolutely should.

Ever Petite was never about replacing tailors. It was about making fashion more accessible—so that when you find the perfect pair of jeans, they actually fit without an automatic trip to the tailor. But when you want that extra level of perfection, for a big event, a power suit, or just because you deserve to feel amazing in your clothes, a skilled tailor is worth every penny.

The truth is, I’ve spent a lot of money on tailoring over the years, and while it can be frustrating at times, I can’t deny how transformative it can be. Tailors don’t just alter clothes—they enhance them, making them truly yours. Ever Petite isn’t here to take away from that—it’s here to add to it, to create a world where petite women have more options, more access, and more confidence in their wardrobes. Tailors will always be part of that vision.

And honestly? If you have a great tailor in your life, hold onto them. They’re worth their weight in gold.
